In 2001, Monmouth Medical Center Foundation was awarded a $160,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) to operate an HIV/AIDS treatment clinic at Monmouth Health Center at Broadway located in downtown Long Branch.
The program, led by Dr. Margaret Eng, offers HIV / AIDS patients a treatment clinic with urgent and walk-in care scheduled as necessary. The funding also provides nutritional care and subspecialty consultations.
Averaging 25 patient visits each month, the HIV clinic treats newly diagnosed and chronically ill patients. According to Dr. Eng, "These patients will truly benefit from the medication education, assistance with entitlements, transportation and a myriad of services a dedicated case manager can offer them." Also, the program's dedicated HIV nurse provides patient education and lifestyle counseling.
Dr. Eng also notes that it is difficult to for health care professionals to reach the population at greatest risk… "we have to be more creative in reaching out to the population that is at greatest risk."
